JOSEPHINE BAKER AND THE BLACK JAZZ CRAZE

Site: http://www.npg.si.edu/exh/noir/index.htm

Diva Josephine Baker, the Charleston dance, the Twenties Paris Jazz Scene--all are brilliantly captured by French graphic artist Paul Conlin in his portfolio LE TUMULTE NOIR, exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery on the Smithsonian site. The presentation of information is outstanding. There is a cohesive, rhythmic flow to each of the three sections, which are highlighted by a stunning combination of art with text. The Introduction is a compact, yet informative, overview of the relationship between Ms. Baker and Conlin that resulted in the legendary artwork. Historical Background provides greater detail on the impact that Josephine Baker and her troupe had on the Paris Jazz scene and how it was all captured artistically by Paul Conlin’s exquisite graphic artwork. The Exhibition Checklist section is pure eye candy! A click of the mouse on any of the 14 color lithograph titles produces a totally captivating view of the described art. My words can't do justice to the beauty of LE TUMULTE NOIR. Stop by and prepare to be dazzled!
