Top » Workplace & CareerA "gap girl" grandmaSite: http://www.nytimes.com/library/financial/110399work-myjob.htmlRemember those "Gap Girls" from Saturday Night Live a few years back? They were portrayed as petty, ditsy--and not a day over twenty. In this amusing piece from the New York Times, Elaine Soloway describes her own sojourn as a Gap Girl--but unlike her TV counterparts, at the time of her employment Soloway was 60 years old. After three months, with "every aged bone in [her] body" aching from the rigors of retail, Soloway quit the Gap, but not before spending her entire salary on clothes for her family and herself. After reading her tale, you may decide, like Soloway did, that the art of selling jeans and khakis should be left "to the young and hardy." Tue, 16 Nov 1999 13:35:03 -0800
