Aging Issues of Lesbians and Gays

The Lesbian and Gay Aging Issues Network (LGAIN) has as its goal the raising of awareness about the special challenges lesbians and gay men face as they grow older. Because of the near-obsession with youth in many U.S. subcultures (certainly seen in the gay male community), older lesbians and gays often face special problems when trying to gain access housing, healthcare, long-term care and social services. LGAIN "fosters and creates opportunities for multidisciplinary dialogue among policymakers, administrators of aging services, service providers, researchers and older gay men and lesbians." LGAIN (and its home page) is a constituent unit of the American Society on Aging's (ASA) site and, as a result, this homepage gives skeletal information about its purpose and offers membership it the ASA. In addition, readers are given access to "OutWord Online"--a monthly e-mail newsletter that provides announcements and (occasional) articles. This is a good place for lesbians and gays to evaluate their concerns about ageism and, if desired, join a cause that tries to do something about it.
