Tinder spearheads push for interracial couple emojis

On Tuesday, February 27th, Tinder, the online dating application, announced that it has created a petition for the creation of interracial couple emojis. Tinder has named the movement #representlove and would allow users to edit the skin tone of the couple with the heart emoji.

Emojis of all races were released in 2015, but they have still yet to include skin tone options for couples. The project is being led by Jennifer Lee and Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit. The petition, which has gathered 494 of the 1000 signatures it needs, would add three new skin tones and 21 new combinations of interracial couples.

Despite the support for emoji diversity, the actual process of review, approval, and standardization could take up to two years to complete.
